If you’re like me you probably never gave much thought to this question before. Truth be told, it’s not until I had to make some tough decisions that I really looked into it. I can also tell you that it’s not an overnight process. The first thing I did was to go back to basics and researched the definition for each term. I used the Cambridge University Press dictionary as a reference guide. Career definition Career is defined as: a job for which you are trained and in which it is possible to advance your working life, so that you get greater responsibility and earn more money. Job definition A job is defined as: the regular work that a person does to earn money. Looking at these definitions, one can argue that they are somewhat interchangeable. Yes, that’s true as they both require working to earn. However, the major difference is that a career is a long term goal while a job can be used for short term gains. Can a job become a career? While it’s clear that a career is a more focused path that requires more planning, professional development and training, a job can definitely become a career. Clear career goals will help you determine what jobs are best suited to achieve this. Work smart not hard You will need to gain experience so try and choose jobs that will allow you to gain transferable skills for your career development. Seek mentorship Try to identify someone that is in a senior position in the profession you desire. If possible, ask for guidance. Do some background research on their career path and use it as a reference guide. What brings you satisfaction? This is where your exploration begins. Sit with this question and give it some deep thought. The answer will serve as the foundation for your career goals and success. Motivation Money should not be the only motivation as you are bound to encounter challenges as you climb the career ladder. It’s a step by step process that will require focus and grit. A sense of purpose This was what brought it home for me. A sense of purpose and adding value were my key takeaways when examining the differences between a job versus a career. Because, building a career allows you to explore what self-actualisation means to you. It helps you decide how you want to show up in the world. So, which would you prefer, a job or a career?
