OK so you’ve identified the job and need to send your resume. Should you send the same resume to all your potential employers? The answer is NO! Resumes are all about storytelling. Be careful though, it’s not a fantasy novel, instead, it’s a strategic document that shows potential employers how you will deliver. You should also note that many organizations now employ the use of certain algorithm softwares to aid in their reviewing process. So, when I say strategy is important, it is! As now you have to also consider how an artificial intelligence program screens your application. So, keep reading and keep score to see if your resume sucks or not. #1 It’s in the details. What are the key words in the job description? It is definitely true when they say “one size doesn’t fit all” especially in regards to your resume. You have to pay attention to the job description and make sure your resume lines up. For example, in the job post above, they are seeking a candidate that is comfortable with digital databases, document keeping and pays keen attention to details. Therefore, it would be remiss of you to highlight your negotiation skills, marketing abilities or social media savviness. This job does not require those skill sets. Remember, it’s in the details. # 2 Formatting matters Forget the fanciness and over the top graphics. Easy to read, clear and concise resumes make the most impact. Ideally your resume should not be more than 2 pages. Choose a simple format. The top 3 formats are: 1. The reverse chronological format : traditional format where you list your experience in the reverse chronological order. 2. Functional format : showcases skills over experience 3. Combination format : otherwise known as hybrid is a combination of 1&2. personally recommend the reverse chronological format. It’s the most common and internationally recognized. # 3 Highlight Past Experiences Don’t just write generic descriptions of your past experience. Be strategic. Focus on impact and results.. For example: - Grade 4 Primary teacher with good exam results - Achieved 80% passes in Grade 4 National Exams. Remember Quality over Quantity so you don’t need to list every single job, only the ones relevant to the post you are applying for. # 4 Honesty is still the best policy Don’t oversell, fake or make up skills or experiences you don’t have. As stated earlier in this article, you are telling employers how you will deliver. So, the same holds true in the reverse, if you don’t deliver you will be out of a job sooner than later. So, how did you score? Does your resume suck or not? Success Tip: Put your LinkedIn url on your resume. A recent survey conducted by Career Builders showed that 54% of employers ruled out a candidate based on their social media presence. So why not start with the one that you can maximize the most!
