A bedroom is a comfortable relaxing place to be after a long busy day. In most cases however, it’s offered the least attention compared to the living room as visitors never have to check it out. It should be noted that the bedroom ought to be the best place in the house as it’s where you get that great good night sleep that improves your wellbeing. Aside from that, it’s where most of your personal belongings are kept, a bedroom is also where you connect with your partner, and not to forget, it’s a space you call your own. Experts weigh in on how you can revamp or have a stunning and styled bedroom. Tom Gasana, an interior consultant in Kigali says you should choose a sustainable and elegant colour, however focus on colours of your choice. Bedroom colours can be navy blue, lavender, grey, white or yellow, among others, but ensure that they match with your bed and furniture in the room. Don’t overlook the ceiling. He says that the ceiling has to be painted with a soft colour such as creamy white, which is a slightly different version of the wall; this will give space and a comfortable feeling. According to Adrian Innocent, a construction manager and interior designer in Kigali, the ceiling is another wall in the house. It’s what you look at as you lay down. Painting it with a soft colour would make it appear soothing. “Alternatively, you can cover it with a wallpaper of your choice, or use decorative paint treatment. When you paint your ceiling a lighter colour, it can make the walls of the room feel higher and your space look larger,” he says. Gasana emphasises to keep the bedroom very simple and unique regardless of what style of decor you choose. Another thing is to simplify the movement in your room by leaving at least a minimum of three feet between the bed and side walls or a large piece of furniture. Furnish your room only with what you need; you can add bedside tables with chandeliers on each side and a chair on the end side of the bed. If you have enough space, he encourages you to place a chest of drawers. Gasana adds that you can also accessorise your room with beautiful art pieces of your desire, place a small carpet at the end of your bed and add flowers if needed. Choose the right bed for your bedroom design. Innocent mentions to go for the bed frame that best suits your needs. If you don’t have enough space, you can think of a bed that lifts up to reveal hidden storage in the stand. With a small bedroom, a king-sized bed wouldn’t be the best option as you want to save up some space for other items. He points out that once the right size of the bed is sorted, another important thing not to undermine is the right mattress, pillow, a light duvet and comfy topper. The more comfortable the bed is, the lesser the issues of the neck and back pain, and an assurance of good sleep. The interior designer further notes that try to avoid a lot of irrelevant bedroom furniture in your bedroom so that you’re not straining to reach your coffee tables, shoe rack, among others. To avoid the congestion, think about extra storage spaces, you could add drawers underneath your bed. Follow your personal designs. Go for styles that appeal to you and do not design for the sake of it. You can have a comfortable room if it’s designed with a touch of your preferences. For example, if you love art, include it. Simple but nice pieces would be great as the bedroom shouldn’t be so busy. You can paint your bedroom your favourite colour to have a sense of belonging anytime you enter it, he states. Scented candles can add a fresh smell to your room, making it a place you want to be. Scents can create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Also, add enough light to the room. Gasana explains that when it comes to sleeping at night, the darker the room the better, but what about the other hours you spend in the bedroom, maybe reading or dressing up in the morning. He advises choosing the following lights to match with your bedroom decor style. Flush mount ceiling fixture. This, he says, is a type that is usually attached to the ceiling and is covered with a well-designed glass with a bulb inside, commonly known as overhead bedroom light. Semi-flush mount fixture. This can be used in a much larger bedroom with a luxurious type of décor, though it is more suitable for the living room, the interior consultant notes. Pend lights. He points out that this one is normally hang down the ceiling to spread much light, but one can use dimmer bulbs to avoid losing the colours in the room (bed, walls, colours and other furniture and the decor inside). He also recommends using chandeliers on the bedroom side because they beautify the room with or without the ceiling light.
