James Muigai has won the golf amateur tournament after a hard-fought victory over Antony Olwit in a tense final held at Kigali Golf Course on Thursday. The finalists faced off in the final of the annual Golf tournament which returned in September after the government cleared sports activities to resume after an 18-month hiatus. Olwit booked himself a ticket to the final after beating Cecilia Misari in the individual competition. Muigai joined him at the final after seeing off Clement Uwajeneza in another tough semifinal, just a few days after recovering from an injury. The duo showed impressive performance in the final’s early stages, but Olwit proved a better character taking the early lead. He, however, could not sustain the relentless pressure from Muigai who fought back and went ahead and never lost the lead from there. Playing the final over 36 holes, required Muigai and Olwit to maintain their fitness and stay focused more than the usual 18-hole competition and this is what saved James Muigai to win 2/1 (two up one to go). The victory will see him rewarded with a trophy as the champion of the 2021 PMC Golf league on top of an air ticket that will be provided by tournament sponsor Kenya Airways as well as accommodation. Organisers have lined up prizes in 13 categories including a prize for the group winners, Best Lady, Best Senior player, most improved player, Best Group, Best Captain, Runners-up Foursome, Winner Foursome, and Runner up BBB, Winner 4 BBB, Winners Choice Award, Runner Up and PMC Champion. All the winners will be recognised in an awarding ceremony slated for December 12 at Falcon Golf Course in Rwamagana.
