UPCOMING SINGER Kristu Sano, real name Roger Sano Ntwari, Knew that he wanted to be an artist. He fell in love with music, mostly traditional music (gakondo), that he begun composing his own since 2014. Last year, he completed his music studies at Nyundo School of Arts. This year he decided to do music professionally and has now released his first single ‘Pata’ with its video. Sano says he does traditional music but in a modernized way. “I have 15 songs in studio that are being worked on and planning on releasing another one after ‘Pata’. My second song will be a different vision from a song titled ‘mademoiselle’ which I made a modern vision of it. “I have been singing since I was young and my passion for music grow further. My mother was a traditional singer who inspired me. Most of my songs are traditional but I also do Afro Pop as well,” said Sano. His journey Being raised in a humble family, he says, it was hard for them to pay for his school fees but because it was about music they did all they could to find the money. “When I told my mom that Nyundo School of Arts selected me it was hard for them because they could not afford my fees. My mother loved music so, she decided to sell one of the two cows they had. I was motivated by that gesture of my parent who supported me into pursuing what I love and I’m talented in. I worked very hard in school so that I could make good music, support my family and also make music that help people,” Sano added. Vision Sano said that he wants his music to grow so that he can put effort into making artistes from other countries come to learn about our music. “I want to change what is happening today, as different Rwandan artistes are doing music from Nigeria or Tanzania. Having our own music that identifies us and help boost it all over the continent would change it and bring more value and fame to our own music. Challenges Sano says he expected his music career to go smooth after embarking into music professionally. “I tried reaching out to different journalists but some couldn’t help out. I have also been trying to get people to help me, but many made promises that they couldn’t keep, though it has made me realize that I have to strive for my success and be where I want to,” he said.
