The match that was highly contested, due to among other reasons, the fact that the champion will represent Rwanda in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), an NBA-sponsored club championship that takes place annually on the African continent since 2021. Henry Mwinuka’s REG started with a great performance, winning the first quarter 25-18, but Patriots bounced to claim the second quarter 11-8. By half-time, REG was holding a narrow 33-29 lead. Returning for the second half, Patriots continued to put up a fight, winning the third quarter 19-18, and drawing the fourth one 15-15 points. Besides Shyakas scoring exploits for REG, fellow players Elie Kaje and Pascal Niyonkuru added 12 and 7 points respectively. For Patriots, Kenneth Gasana dropped 21 points and Dieudonné Ndizeye added 14. Mwinuka said the win is a good step forward, and a boost for them. “This is a very good step forward, winning the first game of the series is always a massive boost,” he said.
