Rwanda Triathlon Federation has confirmed Sunday, October, 17 as the date for the 2021 Gicumbi Hills Duathlon Challenge competition. Over 25 athletes are expected to turn up for the one-day competition, which will set off in Byumba city roundabout at 9:00am to the Stadium and back to the roundabout in the city. Athletes will cover a distance of 5 kilometers running before switching to 20 kilometers of bicycle riding, then conclude the gruesome route with another 2.5 kilometers of running. Duathlon is an athletic event that consists of running, followed by cycling. According to Alex Mbaraga, the President of the triathlon body, over 25 athletes are expected to turn up for the one-day open competition. “The race is open to individuals. It will be a good time to prepare our multisport athletes. We expect to have a successful and fun event,” said Mbaraga. While many variations of the sport exist, Duathlon, in its most popular form, involves cycling and running in immediate succession over various distances. The competition will attract participants across four categories, including professional men and women, veterans and people with disabilities, who run a five-kilometre distance. This event follows the Huye Challenge which was held on September, 27 in Huye, that was won by Félicien Hakizimana in the men’s category while Miss Casmir Yassipi Uwihirwe won in the womens category. In the category of people with disabilities, Augustin Rukundo came on top while Boniface Nkubiri won the veterans category.
