Sixteen golfers, from one hundred and four, are playing the second round as they fight for tickets to the quarter finals of the ongoing amateur golf tournament which is entering a decisive stage. Dubbed PMC Piga Mingi’ (PMC), the annual golf tournament returned in September after the government cleared sports activities to resume after an 18-month hiatus. The golfers advanced to the second round of the golf tournament playoffs after making their mark in the third round elimination that concluded last weekend. The 16 golfers who made it to the second round of the tournament include Ivan Murenzi, Clement Uwajeneza, Max Veglio, Jack Kayonga, D Nzioki, James Muigai, B Roger, A. Olwit T, Alice Rwigema, Herbert Asiimwe, Andrew Kulayige, B Mukisa, Cecilia, Marcel Byusa and Huang. The second round of the league which will be played the whole week and ends on Sunday, October 17, will decide the eight golfers who will make it to the quarter finals slated to end October 24. The match scheduled between Ivan Murenzi and Clement Uwajeneza on Tuesday, October 12, will decide who becomes the first golfer to book a ticket to the quarter finals. The duo meet in a game slated at Kigali Golf Club on Tuesday at 6pm. Winners from the quarter finals will produce four players that will play the semi-finals slated for October 31 and eligibility for the many prizes by sponsors including air tickets from Kenya Airways, subsidized membership at Falcon Country Club among other prizes from the other sponsors Britam, Rwacof, PKF etc as they contest to decide who will play the final on November 6 and 13th November at both Falcon and Kigali Golf Clubs. “The upcoming games are going to be very interesting with a mix of experience and new golfers making it this far,” said Eugene Murenjekha, one of the tournament organisers. Meanwhile, it was a busy weekend for golfers who scrambled to make their deadlines for the remaining slots for the next round in the ‘foursome championship’ category as Jenny Linda and her partner Steven Rwabika eliminated Patrick Mulenga and Eugene Nyagahene in the second round playoffs to book a ticket to the quarter finals. The tournament is eliciting a lot of excitement from the golf community and all are very thankful for the chance to come out and play.
