Veteran midfielder Haruna Niyonzima couldn’t hide his feelings from fans following an emotional reception on his Rayon Sports unveiling for a second spell at the club 17 years later. Niyonzima’s heartfelt reception was the highlight of Rayon Sports Day 2024, overshadowing club’s 1-0 friendly loss to Tanzanian side Azam FC on Saturday, August 3 at the fully packed Kigali Pele Stadium. Rayon Sports has always been home, and to see the fans’ unwavering support after all these years is truly humbling,” Niyonzima said. “I am back to give my all and help the club achieve great things,” Niyonzima said, visibly moved by the warm welcome.” The annual Rayon Day event, held at the Kigali Pele Stadium, was served as not only a celebration but also a special occasion of unveiling new players, partners, and new kits for the upcoming season. Amidst the celebrations, club president Jean Fidele Uwayezu announced Kevin Muhire as club captain for the 2024/25 season. He retained the armband after penning a two-year contract extension until June 2026. “Being named captain of this great club is an immense honor. I am grateful for the trust the management and my teammates have placed in me.” “Leading Rayon Sports is not just about wearing the armband; it’s about upholding the club’s values and striving for excellence. We have a talented squad, and I am confident that we can achieve our goals this season,” Muhire commented. Despite the loss, Rayon Sports Day festivities went according to plan as management and players had an opportunity to reconnect with their fans till late 9pm. The likes musician Platini, choreographer Sherrie Silver and her group and DJ Brianne delivered electric performances to add more color to the Rayon Day celebrations. Rayon Sports will kick off their league campaign against Marine FC on Saturday, August 17, at Kigali Pele Stadium.
