Police, RDF in Darfur commemorate Genocide

JUBA - Members of the Rwandan police and army serving in Darfur-southern Sudan on Tuesday commemorated the 15th anniversary of 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The Genocide left over one million people dead. The commemoration event was organised by the Rwandan community and other friends of Rwanda living in Juba. ACP Cyprian Gatete, Rwanda Police Contigent Commander-UNMIS/UNPOL told The SundayTimes last evening that many UN staff turned up for the commemoration. “We teach many people working with us what happened in Rwanda. We show them films on Genocide,” Gatete said by phone. “We have been teaching all people here about our history and what caused the Genocide. We show them films depicting our past, French government’s role in the Genocide and the current achievements.” Gatete said many UN workers do not know the genesis of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. “Rwandans living here who survived the Genocide tell their stories to these people and they now understand what exactly happened.” The Rwandan Diaspora in Sudan also launched the “One Dollar Campaign” programme. The money collected in the exercise will be used to cater for the vulnerable orphans of the Genocide by providing them with shelter. Ends
