When it comes to starting a family, most women are excited to create and meet their little ones. However, there is always a question they will have to think about when the time of delivery comes. Normal delivery or C-section? –a question which will be inquired by everyone close to them. Doctors say both methods are considered as good delivery, no one should feel that having to undergo a caesarean-section is the worst thing to happen to someone, because people, especially mothers already have a controversial narrative about the topic. Jean Raymond Kwizera, an obstetrician says “there no such thing as bad delivery, many mothers tend to think that if you have C-section, you will not have delivered safely, but all modes of childbirth are the same and are all good deliveries.” Kwizera says that most mothers prefer to give birth normally, and “some come to the hospital confident to give birth normally but will end up backing out of the idea due to several reasons.” “Many women want to give birth normally, but when they start to feel like they can’t handle the contractions some will change their mind and ask for a C-section,” says Kwizera. The doctor explains that it is a mother’s choice to either have normal delivery or a C-section, but when there are complications, a quick solution will be imposed. Nowadays, several mothers have been seen to be choosing a normal delivery over a C-section. The New Times discussed with different young women and mothers who shared their experiences and views on this. Aline Murekatete a mother of one shared her childbirth experience When I was near my delivery date the doctor asked me if I wanted to have a normal delivery or C-section, I of course said I wanted a normal one, but when the day arrived, I had painful contractions, to be honest, I tried tolerating them because I wanted to give birth normally, I debated with my thoughts whether to shift to C-section or not.” After long hours of pain and agony, the nurse took me to the delivery room for check-up so that I could start preparing for labour. To my worst nightmare, the baby had positioned herself in a bad position, and that meant I couldn’t be able to give birth normally. That is when I was introduced to the second option, C-section for the safety of my baby and all I wanted was to birth my little girl safely, so I accepted with no hesitation. Murekatete says that despite the fear she had for the operation, it went well and afterwards, she was united with her healthy and safe daughter, she says that after the delivery up to now, she only had major back pain that comes and goes other than that she is perfectly fine. Sonia Umuhoza a young lady in her 20s says “If the time comes, I will choose C-section because I am afraid of all the pain but if there is a way to reduce the pain on normal delivery, I would go for it.” “I am a mother of one and I gave birth normally, and I will go for normal delivery again for my second because a C-section always leaves a mother with many problems,” says Peace Umutoniwase. Clarisse Uwase says “I will go for a normal delivery because I am afraid of operations and the difficulties that might come afterwards, like that permanent scar, back pain and my belly not retrieving to its normal size.” Dr. Kwizera says that though the majority of mothers in town prefer C-section than mothers in rural areas, always advise women to go for normal delivery due to complications that may arise after a C-section. “Research shows that more women who were said to have had complications after birth were the ones that had C-section, all surgical procedures have complications, like bleeding a lot, infections and many others. While giving birth normally presents fewer complications,” he says. He continued saying that “C-section has two parts, the mothers that asked for it and the ones that have been indicated due to check-up results, so for those who choose C-section we advise them to give birth normally in order to prevent complications.” Dr Kwizera says that a woman that has had C-section has a high probability of having another C-section with another child, sometimes a normal delivery might fail and she would be asked to undergo C-section.
