Genocide commemorations kick off in Uganda

KAMPALA - Ugandan communities are set to join their Rwandan counterparts in commemorating the 15th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi next week. The events kicked off with a press conference on April 3 at the Rwandan embassy in Uganda. The Ambassador of Rwanda to Uganda, Ignatius Karegesa Kamali and his First Counselor, Daniel Mutezintare briefed journalists on the special events that will take place during this commemoration period. “Some people want to over look it and deny what happened,” said the Ambassador. He added that all planned events do not only emphasise the effects the Genocide had on our country, but will also prevent history from repeating itself and spreading a message of hope for this fast growing nation. “We are sure it’s not going to happen again”, Kamali said. On Sunday April 5, there will be a service at Kansanga miracle centre by Pastor Isaac Kiwewesi. It will be followed by a visit to Ggolo (one of the sites in Uganda where the genocide victims are buried) and candle lighting, as an indication of optimism and brightness for Rwanda and to all those that were affected.
