President Paul Kagame’s landslide victory has been confirmed after the National Electoral Commission (NEC) released the final results of the July 14-16 elections. Kagame, the flagbearer of the RPF-Inkotanyi, secured more than 99 per cent of the votes, leaving his challengers far behind, the final results announced on Monday, July 22 show. More than 8.9 million Rwandans cast their ballots, representing a 98 per cent turnout in presidential and parliamentary elections described by observers as “peaceful and calm.” ALSO READ: How will political parties share seats in the lower house of Parliament? In the parliamentary elections, the RPF coalition secured 68.8 per cent of the votes, securing 37 seats out of 53 seats in the Chamber of Deputies electable by direct suffrage. The Liberal Party (PL) got 8.6 per cent, earning 5 seats in parliament. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) also got 8.6 per cent, and five seats. Green Party, Ideal Democratic Party (PDI), and PS-Imberakuri got two seats each, after securing about 5 per cent of the votes. Independent candidate Janvier Nsengiyumva got 0.2 per cent, falling short of the minimum 5 per cent required by the Constitution to get a seat in Parliament. The Chamber of Deputies has 80 seats, 27 of which are for representatives of special interest groups (24 for women, two for youth and one for people with disabilities). The electoral commission said the elections were conducted in an efficient manner.
