I recently read in The New Times that people of 65 years of age and above are going to be exempted from the compulsory work of Umuganda (communal work). This is a welcome idea not only to those aged people but to all of us who have relatives at that age or approaching it. Umuganda is really something good for the people and the country as a whole. Though there are some people who look it as a burden or a waste of their time, but it is something that has earned this country respect when it comes to cleanliness. It is still because of this communal work that people have become groomed in a way that they endeavour not to litter the streets of Kigali. So people especially the young and energetic should put in more effort and replace the gap of the exempted weak and old people. Joseph Mihigo Kimisagara
