Popcorn? Check. Drink? Check. And I can tell you I’m loving all this tea Meghan Markle is spilling on ‘The Firm’ aka Royal Family. I’m a royalist by the way and have followed the goings on of various monarchies around the world and will read or watch almost anything about the most obscure royals. My favourite have always been the Windsors because who doesn’t like them, right? I miss Princess Diana and it doesn’t even matter that she didn’t know me and that I’ll probably never cross paths with her sons William and Harry or her grandkids who like myself never got to meet her. Given Harry and Meghan’s mistreatment by the tabloids and some members of the Royal Family though, I might cancel the rest of them and only keep my eyes on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There’re two sides to every story, sometimes more. I’m choosing theirs and have no reason to believe They’re lying about their grievances. Every family has issues but some people will have you believe the squabbles started with Meghan like we haven’t been hearing about royal wrangles and rows for decades! Also, let’s not forget that the Sussexes are grown. I’m assuming that anyone reading this is at least 20 and I bet you all make your own decisions. How hypocritical to then expect two adults well into their 30s to let other people dictate their every decision from where to live, what to eat or wear to who and when to grant interviews and so on? Basically telling them to shut up and enjoy the trappings of royalty the same way black athletes are often told to shut up and dribble, or whatever sport made them millionaires, as if they didn’t earn it! Well sometimes you need to stand up for yourself and speak your truth as Meghan just did. If that means breaking with tradition, so be it, especially if those traditions threaten your very survival. Even the Bible has a whole chapter on this subject. ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and join his wife...’ Meghan only married into the Royal Family three years ago. Surely we can’t expect her to drop everything she believes and holds dear just because. So no, she didn’t rip Harry away from his family. Harry is only doing what every man worth his name should, and that is doing his best to protect his family, his wife and kids because Baby No 2 is on the way. Harry’s right in expressing concern about history repeating itself. Who knows if he wouldn’t have lost his mum at such a tender age if she’d been protected? You could see the pain and anguish when he expressed his sadness at the fact that his father doesn’t appear to have learnt from the past. More heart-breaking for Harry has to be growing up in his brother’s shadow. I can only imagine how difficult it must be at times by virtue of how far down the succession line he is, on top of those long debunked but persistent rumours that he’s not even Charles’ son. It’s a lot. And now revelations that his son Archie doesn’t even have a title and some senior royals wanted to know how dark he’d be. Don’t know about you but I’m dying to know who that was. Also makes you wonder what this whole Commonwealth movement is about if not for diversity and inclusion but then again, it all started with colonialism so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that Meghan is being targeted simply because she’s of the ‘wrong’ race. As for the likes of Piers Morgan and other bigoted people who’ve never had to deal with racism and other forms of discrimination, it’s easy to see why they’re dismissive of her very legitimate claims. Enjoy your white privilege because it won’t last forever.
