The 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections started among Rwandan communities living in the diaspora. By Saturday midnight Kigali time, the first voter had cast her vote in New Zealand, which was the first country to go to polls due to its timezone. ALSO READ: NEC dispatches voting materials to polling centres countrywide “It's a beautiful sunny morning in New Zealand right now and I can't tell you how happy and excited Iam,” said Winnie Mbabazi, a Rwandan based in New Zealand, who happened to be the first voter in the 2024 polls. “The reason I am so excited is because I know my voice will go far in terms of getting my country’s development,” she added. She urged the leader who will emerge victorious in the election to “take our country up higher and higher.” ALSO READ: Rwanda electoral body transports voting materials to polling stations abroad By Sunday morning, different Rwandan embassies across the world were sharing via their social media handles how the election activities were unfolding. “Early risers are casting their votes in the presidential and parliamentary elections across the Nordics,” read a post shared by the Rwandan embassy in Sweden via X. There are a total of 160 polling stations in different countries to allow the Rwandan diaspora to vote. Some countries like the USA and Australia have multiple voting locations.
