Living life: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Men are very difficult creatures to live with, so am told. We are so demanding of the total package that we never ever think that there is time for giving back, not to the community, but to our loving wives or soon to be wives. We want a devoted house wife, an excellent mother to our children, a cute companion to show off to the public, an intelligent partner to tone down our wild life ambitions and an at all times exciting prospect every time our desires rage. Meanwhile, we are busy slaving for them, all day, sometimes all night – my very silly buddy thinks women are the only reason we work. Am not very sure he is wrong. When we put the bread on the table, the clothes and school fees for the children we think that we have done enough. And off we go to the buddy groups, beer and soccer everyday, leaving our darlings home to ruminate over what? We forget that once in a while the girls just wanna have fun. These good creatures of God, we suppose, apart from making us who we are, talk about the better half thing, have their own lives to live. They want to have some noisy time off with fellow girls for this crazy thing they call Girls Night Out. Even though we do not understand why a crowd of noisy women would like to paint the town red - alone - we are supposed to let them be. That is just how it is. We are not even supposed to ask what they were talking about (is it not obvious)? Then once in a while, we are supposed to wash the dishes, rock the baby to sleep, wake up at night to change the baby’s diapers, not to nurse (fortunately for us we do not have the right gadgets!) while they enjoy watching us, giving advice here and there and take pleasure in being someone’s wife without necessarily doing anything. Note that as long as it remains a one off, not the daily routine and by one off, I mean once in a month or even better, a year, because we all know men are not very good at such things, the classic excuse. Finally, we really try not to forget those useless, oops, very important days that should be made national holidays. Like birthdays, one month anniversary of when we met while I was shoving you out of my way at Rubangura during the evening rush hour, struggling along with a million people to jump into the Remera taxi. There is Women’s Day, Valentine’s Day, before I forget. If there is ever a wedding, please remember to edit that How We Met story. A serious guy like me does not use taxis. I hail down a Kigali Taxi Service cab (Ha, not in this life!) and assist the damsel in distress. Remember to add that I am a good, sent from heaven, decent man, even though we both know that I am not. Phew, the things a man has to do for a decent home-cooked dinner?
