The 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championship gets under way today at Bisharat golf course in the Jordanian capital Amman where Rwandan athletes will have their work cut out against the world’s very best. The championship has attracted a host of the world’s best marathon runners including; Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, Eritrea’s Zersenary Tadese as well as Kenya’s Paul Tergat and John Ngugi. The athletes will compete in two categories; the senior men (12km) and juniors (6km) while the senior women will do 8km and 6km for their junior counterparts. Rwanda’s senior men team consists of five athletes; Jean Baptiste Simukeka, Gervais Hakizimana, Eric Sebahire, Felix Nyirenganya and Sylvain Rukundo and the women junior team has; Adeline Musanyezeu, Jean d’arc Mukakigeli and Claudette Mukasakindi. The winning team stands to pocket a cash prize of $30,000, the first runners up get $20,000 while the second runners up take home $15,000. Rwanda missed last year’s edition held in Edinburgh, Scotland after the selected team and officials failed to secure visas on time. Ends
