WESTERN PROVINCE Police are holding Karongi District Vice-Mayor Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, for allegedly defrauding the district of over Rwf 100,000, The New Times has learnt. Police in Bwishyura Sector arrested Hakizimana, the Vice- Mayor in charge of Finance and Economy on Monday. A police source told The New Times on Tuesday that Hakizimana is accused of having used the District money for his own benefit. The source who declined to be named because he does not speak on behalf of the force said police were carrying out investigations into the matter. The Vice President of Karongi District Advisory Council, Protais Nyamurinda, confirmed the development in an interview on Wednesday. “Yes, he has been arrested,” he said. According to Nyamurinda, Hakizimana had received Rwf 100,000 from the former Governor of Western Province, Penelope Kantarama, to repair her house but that money was never accounted for. He explained that on February, 20 an Advisory Council meeting was held at which the district decided to summon Hakizimana over the matter. “The council summoned him because he had not deposited the said money on the district’s account,” said Nyamurinda. This is not an isolated case as it follows a series of arrests in different parts of the country of different officials implicated in corruption scams. Ends
