Tuesday, July 9 Group C APR vs Singida: 8PM CAT (KMC Stadium) APR FC new head coach Darko Novic faces his first litmus test on Tuesday, July 9, as he looks to lead his charges against emerging Tanzanian powerhouse Singida Big Stars in Group C opening match of the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup at the KMC Stadium. The Tanzanians have been a bogey side of APR over the years. They beat the Rwandan champions 2-1 in the same competition on June 29, 2018. The same side, earlier this year, on January 1, came from behind to thrash the army side 3-1 in the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar. APR now look like a rejuvenated side. Despite winning the 2023/24 domestic league unbeaten, the management felt the club needed a new direction. Thierry Froger's contract wasn't renewed, paving the way for Serbian gaffer Darko Novic to take over. The club has also been active on the transfer market, bringing in new players, locals and foreigners, to reinforce the squad. They recently employed former Simba coach Patrick Aussems as their new head coach and he is eager to bring their fruitful years back. On paper, the game will be very dicey. Novic is likely to field a three-man midfield, with Ghanaian duo Seidu Yussif, Richmond Lamptey set to form a midfield wall alongside Bosco Ruboneka. On a good day, the trio can decide the outcome of the game. Singida also possess a pool of fine talents at their disposal. Elvis Rupia, Moris Chukwu, Francy Kazadi and Thomas Ulimwengu are top players who can decide the game with even the least chances they get. It will be a great game and, though APR looks formidable on paper, Singida will start as favorites considering their recent output against the Lions besides playing before their home supporters.
