Scientifically, it has been proven that once you take good care of your body, you will definitely need no detox treatment as the body will naturally detox itself. Celestine Karangwa, a physiotherapist at TCM Technology Clinic in Remera, says some people may call it cleanse or detox, but it includes different approaches to good health. He explains that normally when people hear of detox, they immediately think of teas, pills, or making drastic dietary measures. Karangwa, who is also a specialist in traditional Chinese medicines, notes that there are other things one can focus on to optimise the body’s natural detoxification capabilities, and that most importantly, it’s to keep in mind that the body can do its own detoxifying as long as you are treating it with care. These methods, he says, when put into consideration, naturally help in boosting one’s detoxification abilities. “Adopting or embracing daily healthy choices will aid your body in the process of detoxifying,” he says. Gerald Ruzindana, a nutrition and wellness expert at Amazon Nutrition Cabinet, Remera, says one lifestyle habit of aiding the body in its self-cleansing is by limiting or avoiding alcohol. He explains that alcohol and its by-products are toxic to the body, this is so because when you consume excessive alcohol, it makes it hard for the liver to break down acetaldehyde (when you drink alcohol, the body breaks it down into a chemical called acetaldehyde). Also, he points out that excessive drinking can damage your liver function overtime, thus further reducing your body’s ability to naturally remove waste. In addition to this, Ruzindana says focusing on good nutrition is also another strategy to help the body cleanse itself naturally. For instance, he mentions that when one regularly consumes processed food, the habit puts them at high risk of non-communicable diseases as well as an increased risk of early mortality. This is so because such foods contain many types of preservatives and additives, and the more one consumes them, the higher the chances of developing a condition that may hinder the body’s ability to naturally detoxify. “Cutting out junk food is one way to detoxify the body. Consume healthy foods as it helps in limiting the body’s exposure to toxins,” he says. Karangwa says that drinking enough water is also vital as this is one way of hydrating the body and helps flush out toxins. In fact, it’s advisable to drink between 2.5 to 3.5 litres of water on a daily basis. Another way of facilitating the process of detoxifying, health experts say, is through physical activities. This will lead to sweating which has been proven to be helpful when it comes to general detoxification, as it plays a role in the removal of waste from the body. Karangwa also says to avoid things that cause stress and prioritise sleep.
