APR volleyball club left attacker Merci Gisubizo will return to volleyball activities in July after having his one-year suspension reduced. The left attacker was the subject of controversy when he was sent off for assaulting his coach Matthew Rwanyonga on the nose during APR’s 3-0 set semifinal defeat to Police during the CAVB Zone V Club Championship 2023 held at BK Arena in November. The pair was involved in a heated bust up during the second set timeout as Gisubizo protested against the coach’s attempt to take him off when the army side was trailing 18-21. The left attacker head-butted Rwanyonga on the nose causing scenes from the bench. ALSO READ: Gisubizo slapped one-year suspension over misconduct A week after the incident, the Rwanda Volleyball Federation, FRVB, suspended him from all volleyball activities over what was termed as misconduct. The player apologized to his coach and Rwandans in general but his suspension was maintained. The suspension saw him miss the entire league campaign although APR held on to win in it after beating Kepler in the finals.
