All sporting activities will resume based on an analysis done by medical authorities to ensure that no participant is at risk of contracting Covid-19, The Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) announced on Sunday, August 9. Appearing on Rwanda Television on Sunday, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, RBC Director-General, said that it is still early to rule out when games and competitions will resume until thorough analysis proves that all players will be safe. “Games shall resume when we are confident that all participants in this industry are free from the virus. This includes players, their coaches, and umpires among others” Dr Nsanzimana further noted that there are already on-going talks between medical authorities and the sports Ministry to facilitate the practice. One of the measures, he said, is testing all participants twice a week. Nsanzimana’s comment comes at a time when local sports federations are preparing to resume activities. All mass gatherings including sports events were banned to contain the spread of Covid-19 in March. However, the Ministry of Sports in May announced that there would be no sports events, local or international in the country until September. Under preventive measures issued by the Ministry of Health, a number of non- contact sports have since been given an-all clear to resume activities. The disciplines include tennis, athletics, golf, cricket as well as boxing, aerobic and karate. Others are kung fu, taekwondo, judo, skating, archery, badminton and gymnastics.
