Focus: Exploring the beauty and potential ingrained in flowers

A flower is that part of the plant that makes seeds and accomplishes the task of procreation. The cardinal role of a flower on a plant is simply to lure and attract insects to the plant such that the latter can fertilise the plant in a process called pollination. With this process, plant life, for the flowering ones, is able to continue. Just like how the bride adorns herself glamorously on the wedding day with all elements of attraction, nature also packaged the flower with the necessary fragrance and beauty, all balanced to attract. Since by instinct all God’s creations have a spontaneous way of connecting and being compatible with each other, it perhaps explains why flowers have gone past attracting insects to humans. Just like wild and domestic animals, there are wild and domestic flowers. However wherever they are they serve the purpose of attraction. Often times one comes across beauty where he or she least expects it. For instance, any one who has walked into the jungle cannot fail to remember the blossoming flowers glowing in the shrubs and meadows where there seems no one to look after or enjoy them. DH Lawrence in his book Sons and Lovers explores the infinite beauty and splendour that is in wild flowers and the irresistible effect they have on human feelings and emotions. Due to this strong attachment and meaning people derive from flowers; many have made them domestic companions to beautify their homes and compounds. Some have made provisions like flower pots and other vessels in order to bring them inside houses and bedrooms. It is against this background that dealing in flowers both on the local and international scene has become absolutely lucrative. At least in every city there has to be a minimum of five well established and facilitated flower gardens, where people attempting to beautify their homes come to buy their favourite breeds of flowers depending on their desires. To perfectly match the inherent diversity of desires, whoever invented flowers made sure they are in a variety of colours, each having its distinctive beauty and appeal. Flowers are used in a variety of contexts but in all they have crosscutting essence of venting people’s emotions and passions. For instance on Valentines Day, which is a day put a side for lovers to express their passionate love to each other, red flowers are used. Decorations for weddings and other ceremonies are also often done with flowers. Flowers are also used in moments of sadness like during a funeral when a wreath is laid on the grave of a departed. Then there’s the horticulture industry which is bringing in some good money from exports. Anyway, whatever your reservations on the flower, they are part of our environment and should be exploited for their economic and decorative values. Ends
