Star left-attacker Patrick Kavalo Akumuntu is reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement with Rwanda Energy Group (REG) for a possible move later this year, Times Sport understands. Kavalo, 28, currently plays for two-time champions Gisagara. Speaking to this publication on a Friday, a source within REG volleyball management, who preferred, said that the two parties had finalised negotiations but the player would not join Benon Mugisha’s side until the end of the 2019-20 season. “We have had positive talks and every detail was discussed,” said the source. “Unless something changes in the coming months, he will be part of our team next season.” However, in a separate interview, Kavalo insisted that he still has a contract with Gisagara and he was only focused on helping the club to win their third league title. “The talks [with REG] happened but I am still Gisagara’s player. Talking about transfer right now is an unnecessary distraction,” said the Rwanda international. Kavalo is also a three-time reigning champion of the national beach volleyball championship, along with his long-time teammate Olivier Ntagengwa. REG lifted their historic maiden league title in May 2019 after beating Gisagara in the playoffs.
