Every five years a survey on poverty and child labour is done. It is called The Poverty Indicators Survey (EICV). This year in Rwanda, the survey showed that there was a decrease in the number of children labourers. Child labour is when children under 15 years of age work either for money, a reward in a family farm or business. According to Dr. Jeanne d’ Arc Mujawamariya, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, said that the decrease in the numbers was because the population was made aware of the dangers of child labour. “Universal Primary Education and other development projects have led to the reduction in poverty. This has discouraged parents from sending their children to work for money,” said the minister. In the world today, an estimated number of 158 million children between the ages of 5-14 are engaged in child labour. These children are engaged in dangerous conditions, such as working in mines, working with chemicals and pesticides in agriculture and even some use dangerous machinery. Ends
