Over 50 Rwandans deported from Uganda

Residents warned against border jumping NORTHERN PROVINCE BURERA – Authorities in Kisoro-Uganda recently launched a crack down on illegal immigrants, during which over 50 Rwandans including women and children were arrested and handed over to Rwanda immigration officials at the Cyanika border. Consequently, local leaders in areas near the border with Uganda within Burera district have been asked to sensitise residents to avoid using porous borders to leave the country, and instead seek proper travel documents while travelling across the border. The Mayor Aime Bosenibamwe, made the call in reaction to reports that scores of Burera residents were crossing into Uganda without legal travel documents. In an interview with The New Times, Bosenibamwe said that the village (Midugudu) leaders were being asked to involve the residents in tackling the problem. ‘There is need for residents to report strangers in the area and punish those who accommodate and facilitate strangers who cross through porous borders’, he said. Local leaders from sector units close to the borders have previously held meetings to address the problem, the Mayor added. Rogers Rutikanga, the Regional Police Commander, said that to help redress this situation patrol teams comprising of police, local defence and village leaders have been established to monitor illegal movements.
