Disi to miss national trials

RWANDA’S long distance runner Dieudonne Disi will not be taking part in the national trials slated for March 8 at Kigali Golf Club. However the national record holder has been penciled in for the team that will be taking part in the World Cross Country Championships due March 28 in Amman, Jordan. The local athletics federation assured Disi of an automatic qualification basing on the fact that the Olympic runner had already started working on his individual training ahead of the World Athletics Championship due in Berlin, Germany. The federation’s Secretary General Appolinaire Munyangoga told Times Sport that the athlete will be allowed to continue with his own training program and will lead Rwanda to the Amman World championship. “Disi has started preparations for the World athletics championship and he will not be part of the trials set for March 8 in Kigali,” Munyangoga said, adding that Disi will join the final team to Amman. Disi who has turned his focus to full marathon has started preparations for Paris marathon due on April 5 to keep him in shape for the World athletics championship set for August. In a sudden change, the athletics federation technical committee has decided that the final team will be selected in the one-day local cross country championship which will be held at Kigali golf club for all potential candidates. It has all been announced that Rwanda will be represented by a team of 12 runners, five senior boys, two senior girls and five junior girls. These athletes will be named from the national cross country championship will automatically qualify to represent the country in the world event. The essence to field more women junior players than the seniors is to find capable women athletes who will take part at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games in 2010. Rwanda didn’t participate at last year’s edition held in Edinburgh, Scotland after a failing to acquire travel visas on time while the country’s lone hope Dieudonne Disi didn’t finish the championship.
