The national basketball league side United Generation for Basketball (UGB) have announced dates for the second edition of the Legacy Basketball Tournament. The four-day multi-category event will run from November 7 to 10 at the Kigali Arena. Inaugurated last year by UGB in partnerships with Rwanda Basketball Federation, the tournament is organised in memory of late Aimable Shampiyona and Jean de Dieu Nizeyimana, two icons who significantly contributed to local basketball development between 1995 and 2007. Shampiyona, a former head teacher at Lycée de Kigali (LDK), passed on in 2004, while Nizeyimana (R) died in 2007. File Two-time reigning champions Patriots claimed the tournament’s inaugural edition last year after beating Espoir 86-84 in a nail-biting final. IPRC-South were the winners in women’s section after edging APR 66-57 in the title game. The 2019 edition has attracted a total of 13 teams under three categories; the men’s professional category, women’s professional fray and the men’s veterans competition. “We have secured Kigali Arena as the venue,” Yves Murenzi, UGB head coach, told Times Sport in an interview on Wednesday. He further explained that the preliminaries will take place at Amahoro Indoor Stadium, before the semi-finals and finals in all categories move to the state-of-the-art Kigali Arena.
