Rwanda confirm interest in Francophone Games

Rwanda has confirmed her participation to the 6th Francophone Games set for September 27-October 6 in Beirut, Lebanon. Sport and Culture Minister Joseph Habineza told Times Sport recently that plans are underway for Rwanda to send a strong squad to this year’s event. “We plan to send a strong team. These Games will also help put the athletes in good shape ahead of other major competitions later in the year,” Habineza said. The charismatic Minister Habineza said that Rwanda would send participants in five disciplines including; Cultural Dances, Football, Basketball, Athletics, Boxing and Cycling. Other disciplines in which participants will compete include Judo, Table Tennis, Singing, Painting, Dancing, Story-telling and Poetry. In football, Habineza confirmed that the U-20 team which participated in this year’s African Youth Championship will lead Rwanda’s quest. The Francophone Games are a combination artistic and sports events for French speaking nations, held every four years since 1989, partly as a counterweight to the commonwealth Games. They are open to athletes and artists of the 55 Francophone member nations including Rwanda. In 2005, Dieudonne Disi won gold in the men’s 10.000m. Ends
