Over the weekend Green Hills Academy emerged as the winner of this year’s edition of the Kigali Debate League. Organized by iDebate Rwanda, a non-profit organization that aims to develop future leaders through creating great debaters, the competition took place at Doctrina Vitae School in Remera, and attracted nine schools from different provinces. The debates revolved around three topics; strong dictatorship is better than a weak democracy, should we regret the influence of American culture in Africa and Rwanda should substantially support a one-child policy. Grouped in 28 teams, the young debaters demonstrated a lot of charisma. Debators have charisma when they are debating. / Courtesy Green Hills Academy faced Lycée Notre Damme de Cîteaux in the finals, edging it by 3 votes against 2 from the judges. The two sides debated whether Rwanda should adopt a one-child policy or not. The organizers said that developing a culture of the debate will empower the young generation with leadership skills. “We are investing our efforts to pass in all schools and create leaders who will stand and serve the nation at large,” said Jean-Michel Habineza, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of iDebate Rwanda. editor@newtimesrwanda.com
