SOUTHERN PROVINCE MUHANGA – The Bishop of Kabgayi Diocese, Smaragade Mbonyintege has cautioned medics at Kabgayi Hospital against mistreating patients. Bishop Mbonyintege made the remarks last Sunday while marking the Patients Day - a day dedicated annually to celebrating mass and addressing issues for patients. His remarks follow complaints which have previously been raised by residents in the Southern Province, about poor services in the Catholic owned hospital, and the attitude of medics towards patients, especially in the general ward. Patients’ attendants say the medics don’t pay proper attention to patients and most of them spend hours in long queues. The medics are also accused of favouritism in the health insurance (mutuelle de sante) provision. The Bishop said: “Special attention should be given to patients in order to reduce their suffering because most diseases are easily treated through increased attention.” He noted that not all diseases are curable, and appealed to responsible residents to educate fellow residents to seek health insurance. Other speakers who included Dr. Dominic Rwakunda, the hospital head, and district officials also stressed the need for proper reception and care given to patients in order to facilitate quick recovery.
