Tony Roberts, the founder of Computer Aid International (CII), an organization that partners with Rwanda to boost Information and Communication Technology development is in the country on a three day visit. CII is the world’s largest non-profit supplier of computers to developing countries. The organization professionally refurbishes computers specifically for reuse in education, health and not-for-profit organizations in developing countries. “We are here to follow up on a donation of 500 computers that was shipped to Rwanda at the end of last year. After thorough assessment we intend to know the computer needs this year so that we can be of assistance,” Roberts told The New Times. He added: “We focus on the health sector because electronic health is of growing importance and there is need to improve the flow of information and communication between the rural health centres and the Health Ministry in Kigali,” Roberts added. The organization has partnered with Rwanda since 2,000 and so far Computer Aid London has already distributed 5,000 computers to Rwanda of which over 1,000 were taken to hospitals and health centres. “President Paul Kagame has focused on the use of computers in all sectors but the cost of new computers is expensive yet there is need to reach all schools and hospitals with technology. That is why we bring in refurbished technology at very low cost,” he said. So far Computer Aid has partnered with 45 African countries to provide ICT facilities and only 50 pounds (Rwf 40,000) is charged for shipping each computer. This is the seventh time Roberts is visiting Rwanda for assessment purposes. Major donors to Computer Aid International include Virgin Computers and Software, Ricoh Computers, Bournemouth University and Investec which provide equipment to the developing world. Ends
