Rwanda has been granted hosting rights for this year’s African Cup winners’ Cups volleyball championship ahead of Mauritius. This development was confirmed yesterday by Gertrude Kubwimana, the national volleyball federation (FRVB) executive secretary. Kubwimana said that the East African nation was preferred following her superior experience and consistent participation in the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) organized competitions. “We were given the task because statistics show that we had far more superior experience in CAVB related issues than Mauritius,” she noted. The African Cup winners’ Cups is a rolling event on CAVB’s annual calendar and merges top clubs from the continent’s major volleyball playing nations. According to Kubwimana, the event is scheduled for late December and will be staged at Amahoro Indoor Stadium, the same venue that staged the 2007 Zone V championships/Afro-basket qualifiers. Rolling into its 19th edition, the event will crown this year’s CAVB calendar.Last year, Rwanda National University (UNR) and Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC) represented Rwanda in the event that was staged in Cairo, Egypt. Egypt’s Zamalek are the defending champions while their rivals Al-Ahly volleyball club have won the event for a record eight times.Ends
