NORTHERN PROVINCE Burera district residents have been asked to adopt family planning in order to check on unplanned parenthood. These were the remarks of local leaders during a ceremony to commission the new health centre constructed by Save the Children-Rwanda, in the Gahunga Sector. Addressing residents, Save the Children’s country director, Tamsin Ayliffe said that the facility will act as a health centre which will encourage them to adopt disease prevention mechanisms by ensuring cleanness and sanitation in their homes. The first phase of the twin health facility block cost Rwf.67m and the construction of two more additional blocks would also start soon, according to officials. The health facility which immediately started admitting patients, is expected to serve over 34,000 area residents. It is the first health centre in the sector. Residents have been travelling over 30km to access the nearest facility -the Kinoni Health Centre, while others have been accessing treatment from Ruhengeri Hospital, also miles away. At the occasion, the district Vice Mayor, Joseph Zaraduhaye, said that the health centre is an answer to a big health problem the residents have been facing to access treatment. He called upon them to practice disease prevention measures, pointing out that treatment should be reserved for non preventable diseases. Ends
