AFTER winning last year’s national rally championship, Davite Giancarlo believes that he has a perfect car to compete in this year’s African Rally Championship. Giancarlo will be driving his state of the art Subaru Impreza N11 in Rally of Tanzania, the first competitive round in the championship. The Subaru is not new to winning because it’s the same car that won Rudy Cantanhede his second successive national championship title in 2007. Giancarlo acquired the car when Cantanhede relocated to Belgium last June. There after, Giancarlo recorded two podium finishes en route winning his maiden national title. This title was timely for the Italian who had spent seven years as a bridesmaid (in the shadows) of Rudy Cantanhede (2007 & 2006), Elefter Mitraros (2005) and Tony Saegerman (2004) among others. “Rudy is a top class driver but in last year’s Irushanwa rally, I realized that I could beat him with this car. It is a good car and I’m looking forward to the ARC challenge,” he said. The Italian together with Olivier Costa who rounded off the final podium spot after Tony Saegerman (2nd) will be Rwanda’s representatives in the continental championship that brings together Africa’s top drivers. For a mean time, Giancarlo insists that his focus is on the opening three rounds of the championship. “For now, I’m entirely focusing on Rally of Tanzania, Kenya’s KCB Safari rally and Uganda’s KCB Pearl of Africa rally. My performances in these events will determine whether I will continue with the other rounds or not,” he clarified. Rally of Tanzania runs from February 20-22. Ends
