Nsekera beaten in Caf polls

Closer to home, Burundian football association president Lydia Nsekera missed out in her bid to become the first woman from the Cecafa region to sit on the Caf Executive Committee in the elections held in Lagos, Nigeria on Wednesday. Nsekera lost to Madgi Sham El Din of Sudan who claimed the Central-East Zone slot. Magdi polled 43 votes while Nsekera bagged a only seven votes in the two-man race after the withdrawal of Djibouti’s Hussein Fadoul. Magdi replaced Moses Baransananiye of Burundi as the Central-East Zone’s representative. Mali’s Amadou Diakite and Nigeria’s Amos Adamu (Nigeria) were elected unopposed to represent West Zone A and Zone B respectively. Algerian Mohamed Raouraoua was elected the Northern Zone’s representative following the withdrawal of Jamal El-Jaafari and so was Suketu Patel of Seychelles on the Southern Zone’s ticket after Kalusha Bwalya also discontinued his interest in the post. For the Central Zone, Chad’s Adoum Djibrine retained his seat after he defeating Gabon’s Leon Ababe. For the position of Africa’s representative on the Fifa Executive Committee, Egyptian Hani Aboo Rida claimed the slot with 43 votes against the incumbent, Slim Chiboub of Tunisia. Caf President, Issa Hayatou was re-elected to head the continental soccer governing body for a four-year term. The incumbent’s position was confirmed through acclamation during the 31st Caf Ordinary General Assembly in Lagos and his tenure will last till 2013. Hayatou, who has served as President of Caf since 1988, was unanimously unopposed in his bid to remain at the helm of the Confederation. All the elected candidates will serve till 2013. Ends
