Kigali Marriott hotel’s doors were wide open for their monthly event, Nyama Choma, chill and grill over the weekend. At the hotel’s Iriba bar and terrace, the event that takes place every last Saturday of the month, is specially organised for all meat lovers. The event was organised for Rwandans to gather at a nice, open, and comfortable venue, listen to good music, eat good food and just relax. Despite the rain, which threatened to disrupt the event, the skies cleared by 6pm and then it was back to full barbeque. For only Rwf20,000 guests had access to an unlimited supply of meat and enjoyed great musical entertainment from DJ Ira, the resident DJ. According to Alyson Hayes, the Assistant Director of Food and Beverage at the hotel, the event held on every Umuganda, every last Saturday of the month, has grown to become more popular and busy and “the buzz around town is positive for this event.” The event coincided with the Earth hour, a worldwide movement that is held every last Saturday of March, to encourage individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Jagath Chandra, the Director of Engineering at the hotel said that Kigali Marriott Hotel participates in the Earth hour every year, to raise awareness on energy consumption and effects on the environment. With only LED lights guests enjoyed live music from the Micho Band that got the crowd excited and cheering. Due to the 25th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, a period that starts this month however, the next Nyama Choma will take place on the last Saturday of May, with the organisers promising a bigger and better event then. With candle lights and LED lights, Kigali Marriott Hotel celebrated Earth Hour in style. “The month of May will be the season when people will be getting ready for the summer mood so we expect it to be packed and busy,” Hayes said. editorial@newtimesrwanda.com
