The National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) has announced that Huye stadium will host the official opening and closing ceremonies of the inaugural ANOCA Youth Games – scheduled for April 2-6 in Huye District. Rwanda was confirmed as the host country of the 2019 African National Olympic Committee Association (ANOCA) Youth Games earlier this year after hosting the body’s general assembly last year. The home of football club Mukura Victory Sports, with a seating capacity of 10,000, will host the athletics competitions, the opening and closing ceremonies of the five-day showpiece. The multidisciplinary event, designed for athletes aged below 18, also comprises 3x3 basketball, cycling, taekwondo and beach volleyball According to RNOSC, Group Scolaire Officiel de Butare (GSOB) will host the basketball and beach volleyball events, Gatagara High School will be home to taekwondo bouts, while cyclists will use Huye roads. Around 300 young athletes from eleven countries; Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, France and the hosts Rwanda will be vying for a total 39 medals in different disciplines. The essence of hosting the games in Southern Province, RNOSC says, is to give an opportunity to galvanize and showcase touristic attractions in the area as well as bringing sports closer to the people.
