A day in a life of....A Restaurant Cook

“I am a cook at Happy Hour Restaurant in Nyamirambo,” Bosco Dusenge starts as a way of introduction. Below he gives us a chronology of his typical day: I wake-up at 5:30a.m and take a shower then immediately set off to Nyamirambo from Kimihurura where I stay. By 6a.m, I am usually at work. I organise my place of work and prepare customers’ breakfast since they start coming in at 7am. I also have my breakfast at about the same time and continue with work. At around 8a.m, I stop serving breakfast and start preparing lunch. I usually prepare bananas, rice and meat since that’s what I am best at. I work on schedule to ensure that by 12am food is ready and serve the clients who show up at that time. I usually take advantage of the few customers to have lunch because it becomes harder to do so when more customers pour in. At around 1p.m up to 2p.m, the restaurant is so busy because that’s when most of our customers come in for lunch. Business slows down at about 3p.m. I rest a bit at about that time. If it so happens that we had many customers and all the food gets finished, at around 4p.m I start preparing more for supper. By 6p.m I am through with preparing food then have a shower and rest until 7p.m. At 7:30p.m customers start coming for supper and I serve them until latest 8:30pm. I also have my supper and sign off at 9p.m and go home. At home, I take some time chatting with my friends in the neighbourhood. I watch football or any other TV program and have fun with my friends. By 10p.m I am home. I prepare some tea while listening to music. This is also the time I iron or wash some clothes. Latest 10.30p.m, I am in my bed. Ends
