Umurenge Kagame Cup tournament has set its sights on the Western and Northern provinces of Rwanda, with Rubavu and Musanze districts selected as the host venues for the highly-anticipated 2024 finals on May 4 and 5. Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Local Governance, Rwanda Government Board (RGB), and several sports federations, the 2024 edition is running under the theme 30 years of people-centric leadership. The two-days’ event will engage athletes across eight disciplines, from football and volleyball to cycling and Igisoro. On May 4-5, action will commence with the athletics’ finals at Ubworoherane in Musanze District on Saturday, followed by semi-finals of other games including football, basketball and more. The finals for football, basketball and other games will take place on Sunday at Rubavu stadium, after which trophies and medals will be presented to the winning teams. The tournament was established in 2006 under the name Good Governance Competition.” It was aimed at fostering the spirit of good governance across Rwanda. In 2010, it was rechristened Umurenge Kagame Cup,” honouring President Paul Kagame and his support for the promotion of sports and good governance in Rwanda and the region.
