In a bid to reduce road accidents and improve road safety, Rwanda National Police has embarked on an effort to increase awareness on road crossings across the country. The campaign began three weeks ago. It was necessitated by the growing numbers of pedestrians failing to cross roads hence suffering terrible accidents In an exclusive interview with The New Times, Traffic Police Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Vianney Ndushabandi, said: “Drivers should respect to pedestrians’ rights to cross once the green light comes on.” He requested pedestrians to comply with traffic lights because they are the ones that dictate who has the priority to move between drivers and pedestrians. Police officers are demonstrating to pedestrians how to move and what to do before crossing the road as well as recognising traffic lights. The awareness campaign will also help drivers to reduce speed with a view of accident minimisation as well as taking into consideration the essence of road crossings. editorial@newtimesrwanda.com
