EASTERN PROVINCE KAYONZA — Residents of Nyamirama Sector, Kayonza district have formed groups through which they will raise funds to get connected to the national electricity grid. This was revealed by André Twamugabo, the Sector Executive Secretary in an interview with The New Times on Tuesday. He explained that residents coming together as a common group put their money together and paid Electrogaz to get connected. He is optimistic that apart from providing power, the electricity connection will enhance the level of commercial activities within the locality as people will extend their working hours and start using electrical appliances like computers to do business. Before, he said, power supply covered only a 4km stretch of the Sector but it now covers 7kms. “People are very interested in having electricity…..Seeing their colleagues using this form of energy makes them envious thereby triggering them to work hard in order to be connected,” Twamugabo noted. Nyamirama is the Vision 2020 model Sector in the district, commonly referred to as Vision 2020 Umurenge, where most development projects are demonstrated. Twamugabo hailed the residents’ commitment to work in groups, disclosing that some belong to more than one association and have learnt to diversify their economic activities. According to Twamugabo, all the roads will be lit after the electricity installation and this applies to shops and houses too. Damus Muhororo, the district Mayor, said that sector leaders will in the future ensure that there are street lights, and commercial houses in trading centres have security lights. He explained that the move would make trading centres more beautiful and ensure security of people and property. “There is no reason for making residents suffer in darkness. Electrogaz only charges for installation but not for street lights,” Muhororo said. Ends
