Ferwafa president Brig. Gen. Jean Bosco Kazura will lead Rwanda’s delegation to the 38th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) due in Nigeria next week. Kazura told Times Sport yesterday that Rwanda has been invited for the Caf Congress and was positive on participation. Rwanda will be represented by three federation officials at the Congress. Meanwhile, top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation, host of the Elective Congress at which some seats on the world football governing body Fifa’s Executive Committee and Caf Executive Committee will be contested said early this week that they are getting everything set for the assembly. Like the Fifa Congress, the Caf Congress is held every year and over three hundred and fifty eminent persons in world football will storm Africa’s most populous nation for the event, which will be held on February 11. Fifa President Sepp Blatter, Caf President Issa Hayatou as well as presidents of Confederations, will be joined by three delegates from each of the 53 countries in Africa. It is only the second time Nigeria will be hosting the CAF General Congress, 29 years after staging the Congress on the margin of the 12th African Cup of Nations finals in 1980. At the general assembly Hayatou will be re-elected president of the African Football Confederation (Caf) after standing unopposed. No other nominations were received for Hayatou’s post. The 62-year-old will be officially confirmed in the job for another four years at Caf’s Congress in Lagos, Nigeria. Hayatou has been in charge of the Cairo-based organisation since 1988 and has built up a powerful support base. The former athlete challenged Sepp Blatter for the presidency of Fifa six years ago, but suffered a hefty defeat. During his 20 years in charge, he has overseen the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations from eight teams to 16 and the introduction of prize money to the Champions League and Confederation Cup. Last year, Kazura confirmed his support to the continuation of Issa Hayatou’s reign as president of the confederation. Rwanda’s support for Hayatou comes at a time when the country has just concluded hosting the 16th African youth Championship. Ends
