Rwanda Energy Group (REG) have fired early warning to rivals that they will be gunning for the title at the upcoming 2019 Kayumba Volleyball Memorial Tournament. This year’s edition of the annual tournament is scheduled for February 9-10 in Huye District. The two-day tournament is staged in February every year in memory of late Father Emmanuel Kayumba, the former headmaster of Groupe Scolaire Officiel Butare (GSOB) who passed on in 2009. Kayumba championed initiatives of talent detection and development of youth volleyball at GSOB, particularly through the national inter-school championships, and the school has over years produced some of the country’s best players in the sport. The University of Tourism, Technology and Business Studies (UTB) won last year’s title after edging league rivals APR in four (3-1) sets in the final. Fresh from registering victories against Kirehe and IPRC-East in the national volleyball league, REG will be looking to carry the momentum into the tournament in bid for their first title in Huye as the competition marks its tenth edition. Speaking to Times Sport on Tuesday, REG head coach Benon Mugisha said, “We are going into the weekend looking for victory in every game, and ultimately the title.” editorial@newtimes.co.rw
