The long-awaited construction of the proposed Nyamata Stadium in Bugesera District, home for Azam Rwanda Premier League side Bugesera FC, will cost about Rwf9 billion. The development was confirmed to Times Sport on Thursday by Richard Mutabazi, the Mayor of Bugesera District. The multi-billion facility will be completed in August this year with a capacity of 3,400. According to Mutabazi, the construction works are at 20 per cent complete and the stadium will be ready to host league games effective with the 2019/2020 season. In an interview with this publication on Thursday, Mutabazi said: “Construction works are progressing well towards the completion of the project’s first phase. Once completed, Nyamata Stadium will be the first of its kind in Eastern Province.” China Road and Bridge Cooperation started the construction works of the stadium, which will also include lanes around the pitch, last August under the supervision of PRISMA. “The facility will help improve the performance of Bugesera FC and football development in the district. Also, the team will earn from gate collections during home games, which will contribute to the financial sustainability of the club,” said Mutabazi. The club’s current ground is substandard at best and unusable at worst, especially during the rainy season. Meanwhile, the Government is set to fund the construction of four more new stadiums; in Nyagatare, Nyanza, Ngoma and Kigali as the country seeks to position itself as a sporting nation. After 12 match rounds, Bugesera FC are ninth on the league table with 16 points, having registered four victories, four draws and four defeats, respectively. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
