Police 33-29 APR POLICE Handball Club on Saturday were crowned winners of the 2018 Carré d’As tournament after defeating APR 33-29 in the final at Kimisagara Youth Centre. The victory marked a record-extending sixth time the law enforcers have clinched the title. Carré d’As is a season-ending tournament which features the top four teams in the league. This year’s edition was contested by league champions Police, APR, ADEGI and Ecole Secondaire Kigoma, who emerged first, second, third and fourth, respectively. Enroute to lifting the trophy Saturday night, Police defeated ES Kigoma 39-22 in the semi-finals while outgoing holders APR saw off ADEGI 45-25 in the other semi-final. Speaking to Times Sport after their triumph, Police coach Dismas Turatsinze congratulated his players on a ‘very successful’ season and urged them to remain focused and hungry for more titles as they gear up to represent the country in Africa Club Championship. “Every player has contributed their best this season, winning titles is a result of their hard work. Now that we have won everything on the domestic scene, we need to look beyond,” he said. “By winning the league title, we qualified for the African Handball Champions League. We want to start preparations early so we can represent the country well,” he vowed. Police goalkeeper Tyrus Agunda was awarded as the goalie of the season while his teammate Zacharie Tuyishime was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
