Kids don’t just become independent after 18 without being guided well. They need to practice conduct leading towards independence starting at an early age. Through grooming, they will know how to do things right, for example, making useful plans, meeting deadlines, making reasonable decisions, to mention a few. To raise responsible kids, this is what you should do; Set a good example Teach kids about what is right and wrong; do not beat around the bush, rather, appreciate them when they are right and criticise them when they are wrong. Let them be accountable for their mistakes and look for ways to reform instead of making excuses. They should respect time as well, for instance, if it’s time for reading, let them read. Organised children respect time. Give kids chores Let children help with house chores, for example, mopping or washing the utensils. If they don’t do the best job, at least they tried. Explain to them why doing chores matters; not just because they are contributing to the work at home, but because they are learning skills they will need in the future. Provide opportunities to make decisions Give kids a chance to make smart choices. The greatest way to build skills in kids is to offer them plenty of practice. Engage them in decision making, that is, ask them what they would want to eat for dinner, who their role model is and why, what their favourite subject is and much more. Create a culture of community service Apart from studying and doing homework, to be a responsible member in society, kids should volunteer in school activities or with a local community charity. Let them know why it is important to help others like the vulnerable and elderly. Teach organisation and time management Encourage your kid to create a timetable of activities needed to be done each day and they should respect them. Everything should be done at its appropriate time. They should include time for resting on their timetable as well. If their timetable is fixed, try to make it simple and balanced. Problem solving Parents should be available when it comes to problem-solving; help kids work through their feelings and fears, let them handle problems themselves, whether it requires offering an apology or making amends in a more real way. Continuous encouragement Never label your child negligent or foolish because you might be negatively prophesying their lives which might come to pass, rather, teach them the skills they need to be responsible. If they make mistakes, show them the right path. Always remind your children that they are strong and they can make it through even situations that seem complicated.
