Thirty-three local coaches on Sunday completed a one-day training that aimed at equipping them with the skills and knowledge in rules that govern the Chanbara sport. The training was organised by Rwanda Chanbara Federation (RCF) at Amahoro Stadium. Sensei Tsutomu Takahashi, a 6th Dan holder, was the chief instructor. The Japanese expert is the man behind the establishment of the sport in Rwanda, back in 2013. The sport was born when a pamphlet was published in 1971 by Sensei Tetsundo Tanabe, the originator and current president of the International Sports Chanbara, based in Japan. According to RCF Secretary General, Jean Claude Rugigana, the training will improve a lot on the skill-set and commitment of the coaches in the development of Chanbra in the country. “All the 33 coaches, who have benefited from the training, were all at a good level but we needed them to improve on what they already know and also introduce them to new rules,” Rugigana told Times Sport yesterday. Sport Chanbara is a lively, low impact free-fencing sport that inculcates the spirit, grace and discipline of traditional swordsmanship, incorporating air-soft padded training weapons. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
