Azomco Global, a Nyamata-based basketball club that features in Division 2 has set its eyes on nothing but qualification to the topflight after starting this year’s campaign on a perfect unbeaten run of five games. This is the team’s second season in Division 2. In 2022/23, they missed out on qualification after finishing sixth on the table. United Generation and Kepler are the teams that qualified. Times Sport had a chat with Yusef Aziz, the founder and coach of the team about their aspirations this season. Here are the excerpts: 1. How did last season go for you? Did you achieve the goals you had set? During our inaugural season, we achieved a respectable record of 11-5, securing a top 6 position in the Division 2 league and earning a spot in the playoffs. Admittedly, my primary objective wasn't solely focused on winning the D2 championship. Instead, our priorities centred around organisational growth, local talent development, and brand establishment for Azomco, which is dedicated to top-tier coaching and creating opportunities for African players. Measured against these goals, I consider our last season highly successful. For instance, well ahead of the season kick-off in November 2023, we conducted try-outs and promoted them extensively on social media. The overwhelming response, with over 100 players participating, underscores the awareness and interest in our organization is growing. 2. How is this season going so far? What do you think is the reason behind your current success? Last season provided me with invaluable lessons that have significantly sharpened my focus on management and player recruitment. Elevating our coaching staff and enhancing our roster became top priorities this off season. I made the decision to bring on-board Daniel Todo, a trusted friend and former professional player with extensive experience in Qatar. Coach Daniel's leadership and expertise are key to our success, and he has excelled in inspiring our players. Throughout our organization, there is a shared commitment to a culture of hard work, from the players to the management team. This season, our aim is clear: to secure the Division 2 championship. We understand that achieving this goal demands much dedication and sacrifice. We are off to a good start, but honestly, I believe we've only begun to tap into our potential. More training and game experience are essential for our team, and I'm confident that by season's end, we'll be competing at a high level. 3. In case you qualify for D1, what strategies will you use to be competitive? Some clubs that have been promoted have really struggled. To be honest, we're already laying the groundwork for our transition to Division 1 next season. Drawing from my 14 years of professional basketball experience, I'm deeply confident in my ability to scout and nurture talent. My extensive network of players, coaches, and agents I’ve gained throughout my career will be invaluable in identifying and recruiting top prospects. Our strategy involves cultivating the potential of the younger players on our current roster and strategically combining them with experienced local players and imports to ensure competitiveness. 4. Talking about yourself as an owner, how is it going? What are the challenges and opportunities? Starting a new business is always a daunting task, and venturing into a foreign market amplifies the challenge. However, Rwanda's economic stability and effective leadership have instilled in me the confidence and capability to pursue investment opportunities here. Founding Azomco is a culmination of my basketball career, entrepreneurial skills, and dedication to youth development. I doubt I would have been as inclined to undertake this endeavor in many other African nations. Currently leading in the Division 2 league, Azomco has the potential to achieve even greater success with the right support. We have sponsorship opportunities available for investors, which will be instrumental as we gear up for the 2nd round and playoff competition. Our aspirations include advancing to the Division 1 league next season and launching a women's team. 5. How do you think Rwandan basketball is faring in general? I believe Rwandan basketball is making significant strides forward. The growth of our league is evident, marked by increased competitiveness and rising investment from corporate entities, crucial for long-term sustainability. The impact of events like the BAL and their commitment to community engagement has been overwhelmingly positive, elevating the profile of the sport. Rwanda's emergence as the sporting epicenter of East Africa is remarkable. However, there remains a pressing need to focus on infrastructure development and nurturing talent.
